MARY’S Uasr 12 iu e »n Vsi x-y / Vol. XXI, Na 3 RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA October 31, 1958 Co-Chairmen of Follies Announced Dr* Stone Receives Honor On October 17 at the Fifty-ninth General Convention of the Ejhsco- pal Church, Dr. Ricliard G. Stone received the honor of being elected to the National Council of the Episcopal Church. He is the first lay or clerical representative from the Diocese of North Carolina. Election to this office is the highest honor that any layman can receive. The National Council serves both as an advisory group to the Presid ing Bishop and as an administra tive body to.carry out the will of the General Convention. Elected to this council for six year terms are eight bishops, four clergy, four laymen, and one representative of the Women’s Division. They meet four times a year for three weeks at Seabury House in Greenwich, Connecticut. The General Convention, which Dr. Stone attended in Miami, Florida, is the governing body of the Episcopal Church. It is com posed of a House of Bishops and a House of Clerical and Lay Deputies which convene every three years. Each diocese elects four laymen and four clergjuncn to attend the convention, which lasts for two weeks. During this time the dele gates attend to various matters per taining to the church, such as addi tions or alterations to the_ church canons or the budget for the com ing year. This convention was the third one which Dr. Stone has attended. For the past two years he has serv ed on the committee of the Theo logical Seminary. In addition. Dr. Stone had the ])rivilege and honor of being one of four laymen ap- l)ointeed. to the committee which nominated the new Presiding Bishop, soon to be installed in of fice. Dr. Stone is a member of tbe Church of the Good Shepherd. On Tuesday, October 14, Alemrie ''losier and Catherine Potter were ®Gected by the Senior Class offic ers as co-chairmen of this year's rollies, which is to be given on rebruary 10. Catherine and Alem- job will include the presenta tion of theme ideas to the Senoir Class, the selection of various com mittees, and finally, the direction of the actual j)roduction. Alemrie, who is from Greenville, N. C., is the 1958-1959 editor of the Aluse. She has been a member of Orchesis for two years, as well as a member of the Choir and of the Belles staff. Catherine comes from Beaufort, N. C., and like Alemrie, has also been an Orchesis member for two years. This year she was elected Chief Dance Alarshal. Jr. Officers Chosen Recently the .lunior Class elect ed their four officers, dance mar shalls, honor council representa tives, legislative body representa tives, and the sponsor. Aliss Elling ton was chosen to be the sponsor. Florence Nash, president, is from Tarboro, N. C. While in high school she was a member of the Beacon. She is a member of tbe swimming club; she i)lays the piano; and she is verv fond of hasketball. Also, Florence has a rather special inter est in her grandmother s house at Chapel Hill. Sounds good! The vice president is Lucy iMil- ward from Lexingtoii, KeMucky. She is a member of A. R. C., she represents her favorite. The AIus, on the speedball team; she is Presi dent of the Letter Club, and she is on the Belles staff. Outside inter ests? Of course! Lucy loves Sikky Sam’s i)arakeet. Polly Fulkerson from Pensacola, Florida, is Secretary. She is a rather good bridge j)layer. She is in the Canterbury Club and the A'. D. C. and is a Sigma. Polly’s most special interest is a nonie at her Episcopal church. .ludee Aletcalf from Ridgewood, N. .L, will be taking care of the money for the .lunior Class. She is a AIu, a member of the Y. W. C. A., and Y. D. C. .ludee has “minny, minny” outside interests. The legislative Body Representa tives are Betty Latta and Beverley Bunn; dance marshal is Alary Chiles; and Honor Council repre sentatives are Aladge Gregory and Kathv AIcConnick. Underclassmen Select Elections were held on Tuesday and Thursday of last week to de termine the officers for the Fresh man and Sophomore classes. Em Howell will head the Fresh men and Edith Alston the Sopho mores. Em is from Tarboro, North Carolina, and is a AIu. Edith, a AIu also, hails from Anniston, Alabama. This year she is also President of the Beacon and active in the Orche sis and on the Aluse Staff. The other Sophomore officers are: Vico President, Diane Blan ton who comes to St. Alary’s from Alarion, N. C. Her activities in clude the Glee Club, the Dramatics Club, the Canterbury Club, the Y. W. C. A. and the Aluse Staff. She is a AIu. Eleanor Ramsay, who is from High Point, N. C., is the new class Secretary. Being class secre tary is not her only secretarial job; she has also accepted this task for the Glee Club. She is also a mem ber of the Choir and the Young Democrats Club and is a AIu. From Columbia, S. C., comes Caroline Finley who has been re-elected class Treasurer. Caroline is in the Dra matics Club and is a Sigma. For the Freshman Class, Pat Exum was elected A^ice President. She hails from Galax, Va. Besides being a AIu, she is a member of the choir and the Ah W. C. A. The Sec retary is Susan Sawyer, a Mn, who comes from Richmond, A^a. A Sig ma, Daphne Connelly, who comes from Alorganton, N. C., was elect ed treasurer. Daphne also is on the Swimming team and is. a member of the Cantcrbuiy Club. Sally AIcClure, a Sophomore, and Patricia Armstrong, a Freshman, arc the representatives from their respective classes for the Legisla tive Body. Sally comes from Fay etteville, N. C., and Patricia fr om Chapel Hill. Both are AIus. The Sophomore Honor Council member is Neil Alayer from Colum bia, S. C. She was Secretary of the Freshman Class last year. She also is in the choir, in the AMung Demo- cratics Club, and on the Aluse Staff. The Freshman and Sophomore Dance Alarshals are Erwin Parrot from Kinston, N. C. and Susan Poe from Fayetteville, N. C. Bailey is President Nan Bailey from AAY'ndell, N. C., has been elected jiresident of the Coinmercial Students. The other officers are as follows: Ann Lynch from Raleigh, AAce-President; Pa tricia Perkinson from AVise, N C Secretary; and Dot .Johnson froiii Raleigh, Legislative Body Repre sentative. There will be a revote between Nancy Settle from Dann- stadt, Germany, and .loan Prevost from Hazelwood, N. C., for Treas urer.
